Award-winning columnist, podcast host and reporter Amelia Robinson is a graduate of Ohio University’s E.W. Scripps School of Journalism. She joined the Cox Media Group Ohio staff in 2000 after a three-year stint at the Mansfield News Journal.
Her comedic stylings and detailed reporting can now be found on Dayton.com, WHIO.com and DaytonDailyNews.com where she is an all-media journalist covering dining, nightlife, entertainment and the people, places and things that make the Gem City so awesome.
She hosts, edits and produces the “What Had Happened Was” podcast, writes the wildly popular Smart Mouth column featured in Sunday’s Dayton Daily News and contributes to WHIO Radio’s Miami Valley’s Morning News and Miami Valley Happenings.
Launched in 2018, the “What Had Happened Was” podcast was recently named a finalist for the National Association of Broadcasters’ prestigious Marconi Award. It is the first year for the category.
Interviews on the podcast have included everyone from Dayton-raised actor Rob Lowe to ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ star Nina West to WHIO Chief Meteorologist McCall Vrydaghs who described the horror and honor of alerting the community the night 15 tornadoes touched down in the Dayton area on Memorial Day 2019.
There have also been entertainers, restaurant owners, community leaders, crime writers, historians, an exhorted convicted rapist, the Oscar-winning production designer for “Black Panther” and the first lady of Ohio.
The podcast produced in the WHIO studios achieved 1 million downloads in little more than a year.
Robinson won the 2019 Ohio Best Columnist Award by the Cincinnati, Cleveland and Columbus Society of Professional Journalists chapters.
She has been honored three times by the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors, earlier this year placing second in 2018 columnist category.
Robinson is president and a founding member of the Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalists and serves on the boards of the Dayton Sister City Committee and Oregon Historic District Society.
She is a former member of the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery’s Associate Board and the Antioch Writer’s Workshop Board.
