Founder and Chairman, Alpha Media
As founder and Chairman of Alpha Media, Larry Wilson oversees the company that currently has over 2,400 employees working in 250 radio stations in 51 markets across the US. Alpha Media is the 4th largest broadcast company in the United States and specializes in Live and Local radio content, community involvement and creating live events.
Wilson, along with Endeavor Capital and other partners formed Alpha Broadcasting in 2009 which originally operated 6 radio stations in Portland, Oregon. In 2012 Larry formed L&L Broadcasting, and began to acquire additional radio stations across the country.
In July 2014, the two companies merged creating Alpha Media covering all formats including Top 40, Adult Contemporary, Spanish, Urban, News Talk, Sports, Rock, Country and more. In early 2016, Larry led the efforts that doubled Alpha Media’s size with the acquisition of the 116 Digity radio stations. In addition to the radio stations, Alpha Media owns the intimate live performance venues; Skype Live Studio in Portland, Oregon, Alamo Lounge in San Antonio, Texas and Studio East in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
Earlier in his 35 year radio career, Larry co-founded Citadel Communications in Phoenix, AZ. There, he assumed the roles of Chairman and CEO and took the company public in 1998. Citadel expanded its radio presence to 26 states and ultimately grew to own and operate 205 radio stations in 42 markets. He then sold Citadel Communications to the Wall Street investment firm, Forstmann Little & Co. in 2001.
Larry first began managing and investing in radio stations while he served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Combined Communications. He joined Combined Communications after finishing his law degree at the University of Arizona and being a part of Snell & Wilmer Law Firm. At Combined Communications he handled all acquisitions and mergers and oversaw the broadcast, newspaper and outdoor billboard divisions. Larry received his undergraduate degree in accounting at Northern Arizona University.
Larry was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2014 at the Country Radio Seminar. He served on the Board of Directors of the Country Music Association from 1999 to 2001 and was honored in 2001 by the National Association of Broadcasters when he received the National Radio Award. Twice, he has been voted “Executive of the Year” by Radio Ink; once in 2002 and again, in 2016. In 2007 he received the Tom Rivers Humanitarian Award from the Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. for his work and monetary contributions to numerous charitable organizations over the years.
Larry resides in Bigfork, Montana with his wife, Lynn, his dogs, “Bear” (who is the face of the Alpha logo) and Muddy. Along with various other philanthropic work, Larry is a major advocate and contributor to the Northwest Montana Humane Society, the Montana Land Reliance (for the preservation of open space for people and wildlife) and the Kalispell Regional Medical Center in Kalispell, MT.
